Mr (Brother) Hugh Merrow-Smith, of Kings Sutton, Banbury, appeals to all his friends and acquaintenances, to pray for his daughter Catherine (55 and mother of three) as she has just been diagnosed as having lung cancer , and has just started a period of chemo-therapy in Aberystwyth General Hospital. I recently spent Christmas with Cathy and John,her partner of 22 years, and three children Edmund, Thomas and Kate and she had suspicions of a bad cough, although cancer was far from her mind. She is a non-smoker but works as a chef in a sort of ‘Betty Ford’ Hostel where the patients (Inmates) were all smokers or ‘ex’ druggies., although no blame can be placed on anyone. The National Teams and Competition Group of the Angling Trust would firstly wish to thank all the teams for the effort that they put in last year in achieving the following results in 2010;

A lot of hard work has been put into achieving these positions and it goes to show that the squad/development system is working well.

Secondly, the National Teams and Competition Group wish to announce the International teams for 2011, as follows;

The men’s team have won the gold medal for the last four years, under the direction of Norman Berry, who has decided to retire on a high. The team this year will be under new Manager, Bob Gasgoine who will have a hard time repeating the past glories.

This year the CIPS World Championships will be held in Italy from the 28th August to the 4th September which will incorporate all aspects of angling. The teams will be;

Men’s: John Brown, Ian Golds, Rob Marshall, Darren Newlands, Darren Phillips, and Richard Yates. The manager for this team has yet to be announced.

Ladies: Pauline Ferry, Nicky Frewin, Rachael Jarman, Janet Verlinde, Avril Withyman and Adele Smith (reserve) and Avril Withyman (Manager).

Boat: Gary Galbraith, Paul Hart, Rolf Marschalek, Cliff Newbold, Colin Searles, and Mike Smith (reserve). The team will be managed by Neil Bryant who will make a welcome return to the scene.

It is with regret that the Angling Trust will not have teams to represent the Youth’s or Junior’s this year due to a lack of funding to support the cost of taking part, which is a shame as they have certainly held their own in these Championships over the years.

The team selection for the CIPS Long Slinging of Sea Weights will take place at three events being held at Huntingdon Racecourse, on the 20th March, 3rd April and the 1st May, with the final teams being decided at a meeting held during June. Applications for this event are still open and any person who wishes to be considered for the teams may attend these events. Application Forms are available from the office by telephoning 0115 9061 302, or email; sandra.drew@anglingtrust.net. The Championships will also be held in Italy during the “World Games”.

The Selection Committee are finding it increasingly difficult to get teams to compete in some of the events due to the present financial climate, with many members withdrawing from the selection process for this reason. Angling Trust are seeking sponsors for some of our international teams, and we would be most grateful to hear from anyone who would like to fund, or part fund our teams. It is one of the most prestigious honours for these teams to represent their country, and the teams work very hard to bring back the medals each year.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive, Angling Trust said “Team England currently relies far too heavily on the generosity of a few individuals who give up huge amounts of their own time as volunteers, and on the team members to meet their own costs of competing. We hope that sponsors will come forward to help ensure that our angling teams can concentrate on one thing – bringing home gold medals.”

It is now 8.50pm on Christmas Day.

We had 16 to lunch in Nic's house, including Jen's Uncle Daniel from San Francisco, who has spent 12 years in the States and has now returned to Sg to live. He was for many years the chief Electrician to the Sultan of Brunei until he retired.

Also present were Jen's Mum and Dad (Bobby and Ivy), Jen's two sisters (Li and Ming) with husbands and children, plus Nic and me, Jen and Claire and young Daniel.

They (Jen, Nic Claire and Daniel are playing on the TV with the WII game Nic bought them from the Japanese Takashima monster store in Orchard road, (which is ablaze with 20 ft long hanging blue streamers and wall to wall cars all with their red rear lights shining - a magical sight).

Last night we all ( about 20 of us) had Christmas Eve dinner in Bobby and Ivy's lovely house.

Although Singapore is British based with English as the first language, it is not strictly a 100% Christian country, Christmas does not have the religious connotions the UK has.( or should have!!, But everyone seems to join in with every other religious holidays. So the Newspaper comes out today and the Christian churches are open.

A Happy New Year to all our readers and if the planes are still flying I should be home on 6th Jan. Love to you all from Dad and all the above.

Hi All

Ma and Pa doing nicely, had a bit of a bad night with Mum, found her sick in bed in the morning so a good clean up needed both Mum and whole bed. She feels much better now and we ended up having a day in Sidmouth, Walking along the gardens and a bit of shopping for Mum.

The day before we sat them at the pub round the corner, and watched the Tour of Britain Cycle pass by the road.

last week I took them to the Donkey sanctury, where as usual Mum attracts them and Dad wants to take them home!

Had a lovely meal at a good pub we know that has won an award for the Southwest this year, gorgeous think the folks liked it .

Finally booked a week in Mauritius in 4 weeks time, just waiting for comfirmation, it looks like heaven, can't wait.

England and Darren

Hi

Yesterday morning Darren set off on his England fishing trip to Faro in Portugal, him and another team mate were driving with all the tackel and bags while the others are flying out today.

Darren started out by myself picking him up at 3.00am, in time to catch the 4.00am wightlink ferry, from there he was being picked up in the van and going onto Dover for 10.30am, then though France and Spain then right though Portugal to the most southern tip.

This morning around 8.45 i received a text from Darren to tell that they had just arrived, Bless him if must have been a very very long day.

Anyway now he is there, lets hope he catches all the big fish

Can't quite believe that he is 27 where did the time go ! bit scary that 10 yrs from now ( seems he was 17 only last week) i will be 57 to his 37 and thats positively middle aged! with all this swimming/ walking i feel even older at times. I know it should be the opposite.

by he way have a look at the merrow's blog, seems Pete has had an episode that sounds spookly like my so called heart attack/ think i'm dying incident... talk about its in the genes.

Auntie Margaret

Sad news today of the passing of our Auntie,

Auntie Margaret, Uncle Hugh and the Merrow-Smith Cousins were a huge part of the family life, Margaret will be sadly missed, she was always helpful and kind to us Newland kids, what a great aunt she was.

Auntie Margaret died today around 11.00am at Horton Hospital after a very short illness.

All of the Merrow-Smith Clan are in our thoughts

Snow on the Island

Hi from the snow bound Isle of Wight, Teresa and myself have just been for a 2 hour walk along the Alverstone wet lands which was very scenic with all the snow still on the ground after 5 days.

Xmas update, started with a late night shop in Exeter last night , stopping for a curry and drink in a lovely old converted chapel. The lights were on and it there was a chill in the air. I'm making arrangements for the wrinkles pickup from the island and will let you know Ed & T final times asap, need to fit in Brighton with wanting to see you guys on the sun/mon( 20th-21st), so ferry times in due course.

What a good day i have had!

sometime during today i have lost me debit card, what a nightmare, first talking to India about it, second the hassel changing all of the passwords, internet etc. and third not getting a replacement for upto 10 days ( at the end of a month what good timing)

On a lighter note been to the pictures a couple of times seen NewMoon on friday which not like the book but not a bad film and tonight we went to see An Education which was very good.

The Wonderful Life of a Student!

Good afternoon all,

So as to combat the previous post from my mother I feel it only best to 'PERSONALLY' tell you all how I am doing!

As your probably aware i am indeed down in beautiful Devon for the week to 'break away from the smog' and also to do some hard core revision, but as you can read from mum's post that clearly failed yesterday as we went shopping (i say went, more like me and Greg were dragged) Its OK though as i managed

to get a delicious Gingerbread Latte and all my troubles seemed to melt away! I do however have to bring every one's attention to the what can only be described as THEE fashion disgrace of the year- Mum wanted to purchase this purple duffel coat! Yes i know what your think i am merely pulling your leg but hence forth photographic evidence! I'm not going to lie to you but she looked like a bunch of gone off purple chipolatas!

This leads me beautifully on to the Uni update, as last Friday i had a what can only be described as the devils work of an exam. It was on Anatomy and Physiology, two of my worst subjects but necessary to qualify as a medic! Sad times ladies and gents, sad times. Anyway as you can guess the exam went swimmingly, that is if you use the analogy of swimming of force ten gales in the Northern Atlantic! Needless to say i have to wait 6 weeks for this result and then be told of the impending doom of a resit, hence the reason why I wanted to 'break away' and re-revise the subject plus the other subjects too!

However, fear not my wondrous family, there is good in this post! I am indeed going don la London with Father and the clan to watch the Children in Need Rocks (the royal Albert hall) Its a very showbizzy event and also staying at a very lavish hotel, the Mayfair in London none the less!

I am looking forward to it, however I don't know how 'gigy' it will be as can imagine it to be more of a posh show! Either way the line up is great with acts such as Take That, Muse, Leona Lewis, Paolo Nutini, Mika, Snow Patrol, Cheryl Cole, and also none other than Dame Shirley Bassey!!! Stay tuned folks to hear a in-depth on-set report live from my twitter or I'll get round to posting something on here when I'm back home!

So Without further ado i will leave you all exhausted from reading this mammoth post!

Brilliant news about Daz and Roz we re all relieved and as you say hopefully they can get on with sorting themselves out for the future. I'm sure there will be off days lets hope they can be strong together.

Jason is here and we have had a day shopping in Exeter, retail therapy, good for the soul, but nothing out there.

He is off to Brighton tomorrow, to see Tara and then he's at the Albert hall concert for Children in Need with Richard and Co... nice..

We have new windows in the spare room which look fab, and will keep our guests warm at last.

I have the go ahead to decorate it!

Marvelous News, Roz moved back in the Darren approx 2 weeks ago, we are very happy for them both & hope that they can now move forward together.

On other news, we've finally moved Darren completely out of the shed =0) to make room for our new treadmill, the old one finally bit the dust after approx 4 month's of trying to repair it! but at least we tried. We are reinforcing the flooring for Ed's running (he is very heavy footed & I'm just heavy...)also installed a heater & the good thing is once we've finished exercising we can open the wine fridge & take a bottle back to the house! all in all a win win situation lol

We'll keep you updated when it arrives!

PS: Hope Jason has a wonderful time with you down there in deepest Devon

It was sad to hear of Uncle Bills passing, our thoughts are with Chrissie and the family, I have a great memory of when we all went to his house boat, all the family were there , Merrow -Smiths, Bakers, great time playing by the river with our cousins. it was after Chris died i think. For all who were lucky enough to not recieve a wailing hysterical phone call.. I have indeed sold Mini. She was a beauty and she served me well, but the time had come to go our separate ways. It was like taking a lamb to slaughter. She had no idea. Sad times..

The First Day

Hi All
Just to let you know yesterday was the first day that i wore my glasses! there were quite a few comments at work mostly good ones, surprising things look alot clearer now:)

We were sorry to hear the news about uncle bill, and would like to pass our thoughts on to Chrissie, mum and dad were informed of Bill's passing yesterday.

Mum and dad's picture frame is now loaded fully loaded, the hard part is now going to happen, showing them how to use it, this may take some time, no, this will take alot of time knowing what dad's like with modern technology.

Well done T & Ed for friday, I thought it went really well and a good turn out for Tina. It felt right to have her final resting place as Oxford and with Grandpa & Grandma, the sun came out which I think you know I see as a sign that we were right.

Got home about 11pm, after the school run and cuppa with Mandy & co, at least the motorway was open , so with greg asleep and bags of chocolate I sped home!
